Art Deco in Arkansas

You know how you believe that know a place so well that you don’t even see what’s right in front of your face because you think you already know what’s there?  Well, that’s how I sometimes feel about a little town called Nashville, AR.  My grandparents lived the majority of their lives there.  My parents grew up, went to school, and got married and started our family there.  I spent all but maybe 1 or summers there for as far as my memory goes back until I was about 20 years old.  With a population of less than 5,00o folks, I thought I’d seen it all.

That was, until this past Memorial Day when I stopped uptown to find a nicely staged flag that I could photograph.  I stopped at the courthouse.  The same courthouse on the corner uptown where it has always been.  The same courthouse where I got my driver’s license, y’all.  No biggie, just a regular courthouse.  Not!  I guess with time, age, and a little wisdom, my filter was different.  I noticed its beauty and uniqueness among other buildings in the town.  I snapped a few pictures of the flags and memorial tribute for an Instagram post (do it for the ‘gram), and I also took some photos of the exterior of the building.  I hope I am able to catch it during business hours the next time I visit home so that I can get interior photos, but these details will suffice for now.  Welcome to the Howard County Courthouse, peoples.

And here’s a throwback, via

I see the building’s style as Art Deco, and Wikipedia users define it as moderne, which is basically a spin-off of art deco.  Wikipedia gets a lot of people through college these days so I suppose we can trust it, right?  Anywho, think Great Gatsby-ish.  Architecture never fails to fascinate me, and I love seeing older buildings still living in this new age.  Hence the blog name – OLD world, NEW girl.  Get it, get it?  Explaining that will never get old, haha.

I hope y’all are opening your eyes to things you thought you knew everything about and finding new beauty in them, too!  If not, give it a try.  I’m sure it is one of the actions that makes this world a better place ❤

  1. Addie, that is a gorgeous courthouse! I love the Art Deco font they used above the door. Isn’t it funny how you can look at something all of your life … and then one day see it with new eyes. I really enjoyed this post. All the best, Terri

  2. When I was in college, the professors said we could not use Wikipedia, LoL. That is so funny to me. Wikipedia is the first source for most all of us 🙂
I love old buildings, especially in rural southern towns. That is where you will find the best architecture and history. Howard County Court House is great. Love the pics too.
